ToggleMovie Review of Munjya (2024)
The story follows a shy boy whose family harbors a dark secret related to a spirit named Munjya, which comes to light during his visit to his native village. Now, he must save his loved ones from Munjya, as the spirit has targeted him.
Abhay Verma takes the lead role and is the heart of the film. His innocent charm and well-balanced expressions are sure to win hearts. He is a promising talent and appears to have a bright future in acting. In contrast, Sharvari Wagh has a limited role, and even in her short screen time, she tends to overact. Her character is underdeveloped, and the chemistry between the leads is lacking. Mona Singh, playing the pushy mother, delivers a solid performance. The comedy brought in by Sathyaraj is one of the film’s highlights; every scene featuring him is a laugh riot, showcasing his impressive acting skills. Suhas Joshi, who plays the grandmother, adds a cute touch and performs well.
The graphics and CGI used to portray Munjya are excellent, and the technical team deserves praise for their work. However, if the story had more depth, it could have been exceptional. The editing is notably weak, with scenes jumping around rather randomly. The background music enhances the horror atmosphere, and while the jump scares are present, they fail to deliver genuine scares, which is disappointing.
Plot Summary
“Munjya” is a supernatural horror-comedy film directed by Aditya Sarpotdar. The story revolves around a young man named Bittu, who returns to his native village in Konkan for his cousin’s engagement. During his journey, he uncovers a hidden family secret and awakens a vengeful spirit named Munjya.
The legend of Munjya dates back to the 1950s when a young boy named Gotya fell in love with his neighbor Munni. Desperate to be with her, Gotya attempted to perform a dark ritual that went tragically wrong, resulting in her death and the creation of the evil spirit, Munjya.
In the present day, Bittu, who is in love with his childhood friend Bela, begins experiencing strange events and nightmares about the haunted tree where Munjya resides. Ignoring the warnings, Bittu decides to visit the tree and ends up getting possessed by Munjya. The spirit asks for Bittu’s help to find and marry Munni, threatening the safety of Bittu’s loved ones.
While Bittu struggles to break free from Munjya’s control, he learns more about his family’s past and the true nature of the curse. With the help of his friends and family, Bittu faces a series of fun and terrifying challenges to save himself and Bela from Munjya’s clutches.
The film blends supernatural horror with comedy, resulting in an entertaining and chaotic thriller that keeps audiences glued to their seats.
